Who's keeping soul now? Music is changing. Are we in a state of evolution or devolution? Classically trained on the piano and self-taught on the MPC, Hayling has built his repertoire while providing soundscapes for up-and-coming musical and visual artists. He also contributes to a number of independent projects, including roles as a co-producer/creative director for Columbia Nights, an electro/jazz/soul group, and producer/MC for hip-hop/R&B duo BlackMindz. From sample-based beats to electronic suites, his sound is reflective of his diverse musical influences, including Ahmad Jamal, Stevie Wonder, Sun-Ra, Weather Report, A Tribe Called Quest, The Soulquarians, Madlib, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Organized Noize and Little Dragon. Deliberate in its pulse, Hayling’s music is hot where you expect cold, zaps where you expect zoom, and rests where you expect stress. All at once, it’s possessive and giving. Demanding and open. It’s soul. As we approach the intersection of the already and the not yet, Hayling is poised to provide the soundtrack for the ride. ![]() |
